What an unforgettable 2025 International Leadershi

What an unforgettable 2025 International Leadership Association @leadershipnexus Conference in Chicago and representing @excelsioruniv! Here are a few highlights from an incredible experience:

🎤 Attending as a presenter, incoming Followership Stream Chair, and engaged ILA member.

✨ Keynote sessions were inspiring, featuring:
-Michael Strautmanis (Obama Foundation)
-Calvin Butler (Exelon)
-Sona Wang (Randolph Entertainment), whose insights beautifully prepped the audience for my presentation on leadership and followership in startups.

📸 Finally made it into Mark Rennaker, PhD and Dr. Mike Linville's group photo this year – No more “I was there, I swear!” jokes! (A joke that delightfully landed me on one of their presentation slides!)

🌟 Our World Cafe session, *Transition Dynamics: Trust and Followership During Organizational Change*, with Mitchell Gurick, PhD (OpenAI) and Vailet Yarijanian, PhD (Fusion Academy), was a hit. Attendees brought their own organizational transition stories, layering the frames of organizational dynamics, followership, and change leadership to generate meaningful dialogue and insights.

📊 Thrilled to present my research on *Leadership-Followership Dynamics in Startup Evolution*. I was elated to have a followership fan club join the session, sparking thoughtful questions and great discussions around findings from 35 startup professionals.

💰 A visit to the Chicago Fed Money Museum – I got closer to $1 million (literally!) than I’ll ever be again.

🌉 A memorable river cruise – Fascinating lessons about Chicago’s architecture and commerce history.

🏈 Wrapped up the trip in (my) true ILA tradition – Cheering on the Bills at a Bills Backers Bar, which was packed even during a Bears game. The #BillsMafia camaraderie is thriving across the country!

I’ll be presenting two sessions at the @leadershipnexus Conference in Chicago this week, diving into the critical dynamics of leadership and followership within organizations. Here’s a glimpse into what we’ll be covering:

Leadership-Followership Dynamics in Startup Evolution: A Multifaceted Study
Small businesses and startups drive 44% of U.S. economic activity and create two-thirds of new jobs—an impactful setting to examine leadership and followership. In this session, I’ll be presenting findings from my study of 35 startup professionals across various growth stages, exploring how leadership and followership practices evolve as startups grow. I’ll share insights into how early-stage startups, focused on innovation and agility, transition to later stages where structure and stability become essential. We’ll discuss shifts in communication, changing power dynamics, and the unique challenges startups face in fostering collaboration and effective leadership as they scale.

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the U.S. Army War College’s Strategic Leader Staff Ride, and it was an unforgettable experience! It wasn’t just about historical insights—it was a unique team-building opportunity that connected colleagues from across the institution. Here are some key takeaways:

>>Strategic Alignment: Explored how clear communication and alignment are crucial for effective leadership, both on the battlefield and in today’s complex environments.

>>Purpose-Driven Leadership: Stories like the First Minnesota’s courageous stand showed the power of leading with purpose, even in the toughest circumstances.

I had the pleasure of leading the Teach Sprint activity, where our dedicated faculty collaborated to create innovative solutions for supporting effective teaching. The creativity and dedication of our team were truly inspiring—seeing everyone come together to brainstorm, validate ideas, and share best practices was a highlight of the retreat.

From icebreakers to deep discussions and lots of shared insights, it was a great opportunity to connect, learn, and elevate our approach to education. A big thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to this productive experience!
