Leadership-Followership Dynamics in Startup Evolution: A Multifaceted Study
Small businesses and startups drive 44% of U.S. economic activity and create two-thirds of new jobs—an impactful setting to examine leadership and followership. In this session, I’ll be presenting findings from my study of 35 startup professionals across various growth stages, exploring how leadership and followership practices evolve as startups grow. I’ll share insights into how early-stage startups, focused on innovation and agility, transition to later stages where structure and stability become essential. We’ll discuss shifts in communication, changing power dynamics, and the unique challenges startups face in fostering collaboration and effective leadership as they scale.

I had the pleasure of leading the Teach Sprint activity, where our dedicated faculty collaborated to create innovative solutions for supporting effective teaching. The creativity and dedication of our team were truly inspiring—seeing everyone come together to brainstorm, validate ideas, and share best practices was a highlight of the retreat.

I presented preliminary data from my study on leadership and followership in startups. 🚀 Small businesses, including startups, account for 44% of U.S. economic activity and create two-thirds of new jobs. This unique context helps us understand how leadership and followership roles evolve.

💡 Followership is as crucial as leadership. It involves active engagement, collaboration, and shared purpose. Successful startups balance effective leadership and followership for overall success.

🔍 There's a gap in research on how these roles evolve in startups. My findings aim to give startup founders insights into employee role transitions and talent management processes.
